Toney is an unincorporated community in Lincoln County, West Virginia, United States. Its post office was established in 1904 by Brad Toney, merchant. ==History== As early as 1900, Bradford D. and Catherine Toney operated a general store at present-day Toney. At that time, Toney was known as Greenshoal. Keenan Toney, son of Brad Toney, acted as salesman for the family business in 1900. Brad Toney served on the district board of education for the following years: 1902-1904, 1909-1910, 1914-1917. In 1903, the Toney store was valued at $250. In 1904, the community was first referenced as "Toney." Keenan Toney served as postmaster from 1906 to 1915. In 1906, the population of Toney was given as 300 persons. Brad Toney was listed in state business directories as a telephone and telegraph operator from 1908 to 1915. From 1908 to 1915, the family operated its business under the name of "Toney Bros." From 1910-1915, "Toney Bros. Milling Co." appeared in business directories. Keenan Toney, a Democrat, was the first resident of Harts Creek District to be elected as Sheriff of Lincoln County.
